I took my 10 yr old CHEVY van to this CHEVY dealership hoping that trained and skilled technicians could expertly diagnose and repair a problem I was having with the cabin heater/AC unit. I explained to the Service Rep that it was unsuccessfully serviced by a local garage and that the actuator was replaced. Chevy has made more than 3 million Express vans, one of the most common vehicles on the road. A Register tech could not properly diagnose and fix a malfunctioning cabin heater.

The Register tech decided that the actuator needed to replaced (again) at a cost of several hundred dollars, hoping the problem was finally fixed I took the van back late on Thursday night but discovered the next morning the problem had not been fixed and notified the service rep. The following Monday I returned the van for service. After the tech looked at it again, he determined that the problem was in the fuse block, and advised it be replaced for another $614.33 dollars! (There are only two fuses in the block connected to the cabin heater). I lost all confidence in Register Chevy and retrieved my van.

YOU DO NOT REPAIR A PROBLEM BY JUST REPLACING PARTS UNTIL BY CHANCE YOU STUMBLE ON THE PROBLEM.
I would NEVER buy a vehicle from a dealership with such an incompetent service department.

I read the owners rebuttal and will offer some corrections, before going to Register I went to just one garage that I used for several years. If that garage used an after-market actuator that was unknown to me.

Giving the Register tech the benefit of the doubt I agreed to replacing the actuator again, but the next morning (a Friday) I realized the problem wasn’t corrected, and notified the service rep.

I returned the van the following Monday; I showed the service rep that it was working properly when I dropped it off, but wasn’t earlier in the morning when I was on the way. I explained that it worked sometimes and at other times it just blew out hot air no matter what the temperature dial was set to. Does that sound like a short in the fuse box? I asked the service rep if the tech removed the drivers seat to visually inspect the fuse box. She said he did not, she added that he detected a voltage drop, that’s not the same thing as a short.

The owner has not satisfactorily explained why it wasn’t corrected in the first place. I’ve included a picture of the fuse block and the $614.33 estimate for this repair. $546.89 for labor. There are 4 bolts to remove the seat (15 minute job), 2 bolts to remove the fuse block. How long should it take a Register tech to do this work?

Only two 10 amp fuses in this block are connected to the heater.
